Chicago O'Hare Airport


The airport located in Chicago, state of Illinois, United States. It is 17 miles (27 km) northwest of the Chicago Loop. The code of the airport is IATA: ORD, ICAO: KORD. The Chicago metropolitan area is served by the airport. It is the largest hub of United Airlines and the second-largest hub of American Airlines. It is important to note that United Airline's headquarters is in downtown Chicago. On 2006 The number of Passenger using the airport was 76,282,212. The yearly flight for 2006 was 958,643. O'Hare International has four passenger terminals. Two or more additional terminal buildings are envisioned. There are 6 Runways in total. 3 of them is asphalt, and the next 3 is asphalt and concrete mixed. There is also one Concret surfaced Helipad. The runways length in ascending order is: 7.500 ft, 8.075 ft, 7.967 ft, 10.144 ft, 10.005 ft, 13.000 ft. The helipad's diameter is 200ft. It is bigger then the standard. The airport was build as manufacturing plant for Douglas C-54s during World War II in 1942-43. Douglas Aircraft Company's contract ended in 1945. The first commercial passenger flights started in 1955. An international terminal was built in 1958. The airport had an expansion on 1962. The airport was known during the war as Orchard Place Airport/Douglas Field. This name is still reflected in its aviation code ORD. With the departure of Douglas on 1945, the airport took the name of Orchard Field Airport. It was renamed in 1949 with the name of World War II Medal of Honor awarded flying ace; Lt. Cmdr. Edward "Butch" O'Hare. Travelers can choose between the Chicago Transit Authority directly to the terminal or using their car and navigate freeways I-294 and I-190 and I-54 or local roads such as Mannheim to get to the Airport.
The airport is accessible via local mass transit lines, regional trains and buses, downtown and suburban shuttles and interstate highways taxi, buses, shuttle and rental cars. Short term rates are $3.00 per hour up to a maximum of $50.00 per day. Alternative parking at Lots A-B-C, levels 2-6 rate is $3.00 per hour and daily rate is maximum of $25.00. At the Economy Lots E-G, rates are $2.00 per hour and $13.00 per Day. Valet parking rates is $10.00 for the first hour followed by graduated rates up to a daily rate of $32.00. The off airport parking services operated by local private companies, has free shuttle buses which are handicap-enabled. There are restaurants, snack bars, lounges and cafes. But in terminals 1,2 and 3 shopping and dining establishments are located after security checkpoints. In Terminal 5 shopping and dining options are available before security. During the flight a man with severe mental problems stormed the cockpit for 40 minutes. This caused the plane to drop sharply and caused a panic on board. But flight crew and passengers wrestled the man to the ground and him. Additionally, a distress signal was sent by the pilots As result two F-16s raced at supersonic speeds to intercept and escort the aircraft to O'Hare International Airport. At the end the plane landed to Chicago. On May 8, 2002, member of Al-Qaida, Jose Padilla was arrested after his plane landed at the airport. His accusation was about to plant a dirty bomb.
